National Hurdles Coach Workshop
Featuring Malcolm Arnold, Gary Winckler, James Hillier & Dr Aki Salo
Gary Winckler is the pre-eminent hurdles coach in the US today and one of the top coaches in the world. His technical knowledge is internationally regarded in sprints and hurdles and, since 1992, athletes under his direction have competed in every World Championships and Olympic Games – and won medals of every colour. These athletes include Yvonne Harrison, Tonya Buford- Bailey and 2003 World Champion Perdita Felicien.
Malcolm Arnold is National Event Coach for Hurdles. In a professional career that spans 43 years Malcolm has consistently worked with a succession of World-Class Athletes who have performed at the top level. Malcolm has worked with Colin Jackson; Olympic 110m hurdles Champion Mark McKoy; former World and European Indoor 60m Champion Jason Gardner; and 1972 Olympic 400m hurdles champion John Akii-Bua. Malcolm’s current squad includes Dai Greene (2011 World Champion), Jack Green (European U23 Champion), Jack Meredith (European U20 Champion), Andy Pozzi (UK U20 Record Holder), Eilidh Child (Commonwealth Silver Medallist), Tasha Danvers (Olympic Bronze Medallist) and Lawrence Clarke (European U23 Bronze Medallist).
James Hillier was a semi-finalist at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and under the tutelage of Malcolm Arnold in Bath has progressed to become one of the most highly rated hurdles coaches in the UK. His talent for coaching and ability to pass on his knowledge to other coaches did not go unnoticed as he became one of the UKA Apprentice Coaches for Speed and Hurdles, and an England Athletics National Coach Mentor for Hurdles.
Dr Aki Sola coached international level athletes in the hurdles events in his native Finland before arriving in the UK to pursue his academic work. He works as a Senior Lecturer in Sports Biomechanics at the University of Bath focussing on human movement and analysing athletes technique. Aki has been working with UK Athletics since 1998 providing biomechanical support to various sprints, hurdles and relay squads. He has also been a part of the UKA support staff in all major summer Championships including the Beijing Olympic Games.

11.30 – 13.00 – Female Sprint Hurdles – training and preparation (Gary Winckler)
13.00 – 14.00 – Lunch
14.00 – 15.30 - Sprint Hurdles – collection and analysis of data and its use in the coaching process (Dr. Aki Salo)
15.30 – 16.00 – Coffee Break
16.00 – 17.30 - Hurdling – technical transitions through the age groups to adulthood (James Hillier)
